Government Offers ₹15 Lakh Aid for Filing Patents Abroad Under SIP-EIT Scheme
Government Scheme Desk – The central government promotes innovation and intellectual property by offering financial assistance under the PRISM scheme (Promoting Innovations in Individuals, Start-ups and MSMEs) for filing patents abroad.
The Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR) runs this scheme. The scheme provides up to ₹15 lakh to individual inventors and tech startups. This initiative aims to increase the number of international patent filings.
Officials confirm that the government launched this PRISM scheme in 2013 to promote global intellectual property filings. This scheme covers up to 75% of the total cost involved in filing patents in foreign countries.
If a startup, individual, or MSME secures a patent approval abroad, they can claim reimbursement of up to ₹15 lakh. Applicants must submit all relevant patent documents, invoices, and proof to avail the financial assistance.

- The applicant must submit a provisional registration, final audited balance sheet, and all required supporting documents.
Who Will Get the Benefit
- The PRISM scheme applies only to applicants who have already filed patent applications in India and have received foreign patent grants in any of the 39 notified countries.
- Individuals, startups, MSMEs, academic institutions, and government or private R&D organisations can apply for the benefit.
- The government will consider patents granted abroad valid only if the Indian patent has already been filed.
Refund of Expenses on Patent Filing

- If the patent is not granted, the applicant can claim up to 25% of the total cost.
- The applicant must submit the patent grant certificate, fee receipts, foreign bank remittance proof, and an official report from the Indian embassy of the concerned country.
- The government will process the refund only after it verifies all submitted documents.
