Nursery will also be there in government schools, 6 years of age fixed for admission in First Class | Punjab Govt School Admission Policy Update 2025-26
Education Desk : A new step has been taken towards education reforms in government schools of Punjab. Nursery class is also being started in government schools from Academic Session 2025-26. Earlier, only two years of Pre-primary Session (LKG and UKG) was conducted.
This decision has been taken in compliance with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 of the state government. Nursery class was already started experimentally in many punjab board schools in Academic Session 2024-25, which is now being implemented in the entire state.
Admission Guidelines: Minimum and maximum age fixed
According to the highlights released by the School Education Department:
- The age limit for admission in Nursery will be up to 3 years. The child should be 3 years old by 1 April 2024.
- The minimum age for admission in First Class has been fixed at 6 years. The child’s age should be completed by 1 April 2024.
- There will now be a total of three classes in the pre-primary session: Nursery, LKG and UKG.
- After Nursery, children aged 4-5 years will get admission in LKG and 5-6 years in UKG.
Time setting and guidelines
The duration of Nursery Class will be only 1 hour, in which children will be educated through games and practical activities. The School Education Department has directed that special guidelines should be issued for all the newly started pre-primary classes. The guidelines already issued for LKG, UKG and primary classes will be followed.
Priority and future preparation
The department has clarified that only those children will get admission in First Class who have completed the age of 6 years. This decision has been taken keeping in mind the strength of the basic education of the children.
Students who are already studying in government schools and whose age is below the prescribed limit will not be promoted one class ahead.
The education department has urged all school heads to strictly follow these rules and ensure complete verification at the time of admission of children.
